The ‘orticanoodles’ tag has existed since 2004, preceded by some exercises in trying out how to use the stencil medium. Although the Italian duo don’t remember exactly who was portrayed, those first experiments used pop culture stars as subjects.
Inspired by stencils seen on the street and in self-managed social centres in Italy, their approach has been self-taught. While recognizing the power of the stencil as being immediately understandable and visible on a large scale, Orticanoodles don’t confine their art to the street. On the contrary, they see the increasing interest from art galleries and the art market as enhancing the ‘free expression’ it allows, and contrast it with elitist or exclusive art.
